My Summer Vacation

OK, it's been a while. So a few pics to let you know I'm still here and still the same.

Cyndi at Gunnison is a good start.

And 2300 feet below us is the Gunnison River

The rocks at Gunnison are up to 2 billion years old. They started off as granite but time, heat, pressure and chemistry produced a variety of interesting colors and effects. For example

We took the scenic routes to and from Gunnison. Here is Cyndi at Slum Gullion.

I continue wandering thru the deserts near here. Here is a typical view of the Caja del Rio, a million year old volcanic plateau just west of Santa Fe. The knobs on top are the remnants of a couple  volcanic necks. Wild horse, rabbits, deer, coyotes, lizards, snakes, bears, bees and birds are scattered throughout the area. And cows. Lots of cows.

During my walks I find various things, like this horse skull. Much to Cyndi's delight, I bring them home with me. This skull now sits in our front yard next to the house's entrance. The skull entertains the mailman and provides shelter to lizards escaping our cat's lunges.

The White Rock Canyon on the Rio Grande marks the western edge of the Caja. In fact, it is the reason for the name "Caja". At a puny 800 feet deep, it barely deserves the title of "Canyon" but I like it. And since I'm usually the only person for about 10 miles in any direction, I like it even more.

And there were other micro-adventures, including an RV trip to Indiana to visit in-laws, where we landscaped, watched 10 year olds play soccer, saw various relatives of too much variety and number to count, walked across the Ohio River and back, were led to interesting and excellent restaurants and drank a very good bottle of unwanted brandy.

And if you didn't get enough pictures of rocks, here is a slide-show with more of the beautiful Gunnison formations (only 2 1/2 minutes ... you have the time for that, don't you?).

See you all soon.
